About the Committee
The Commission’s Youth Innovation Committee was formed in February 2019 to identify unmet mental health needs of California youth and to identify opportunities for innovation. The Committee was formed by Commissioner Khatera Tamplen and includes 14 members, ages 15-25, from 12 different California counties, including Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, Shasta, Humboldt, Fresno, Madera, Monterey, and Los Angeles.
The Committee spent the first year of the project working with multiple partners to gather research, host focus groups and to conduct a statewide survey to better understand opportunities to improve mental wellness of young people. After a deep research dive, the Committee chose to focus on using innovation and youth-led approaches to increase preventative mental health services in schools.
The Committee developed a youth-led, regional IDEA Lab concept to provide an opportunity for committee members to work with county behavioral health leaders, local youth, and adult allies to explore innovative solutions that counties can test to increase preventative mental health services in schools. Using this model, the Committee hosted one in-person IDEA Lab and two virtual idea labs and collected more than 50 submissions of multi-media voice pieces from youth throughout California.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee spent 2021 in an advisory role and will reconvene in 2022 to discuss opportunities to showcase project outcomes.
