Keeping The Mentally Ill Out of Jail

A summit is underway this week to develop ways to reduce the number of mentally ill people in county jails. Sheriffs, judges, elected officials, and mental health professionals from 53 counties are in Sacramento this week. Dr. Fred Osher of the Council of State Governments Justice Center says each county must be able to quantify its problem before it can be solved. "It's really critical to have that data to understand who we want to target for the alternatives in incarceration assuming they don't pose a risk to public safety," says Osher.
